In this photo you can see the old juniper tree with a dirt road behind it and the houses in the housing development that is near it. It is such a shame to see this ancint piece of history being threatened by development. There is a dirt trail on this side of the tree where I found the tracks of motercycles and ATV's, and I saw lots of trash; mostly beer cans and bottles; in the area right around it, which I picked up. The tree is surviving but it doesn't look as healthy as it did 25 years ago when I first saw it. Every time I go by there I am afraid I will find that progress has destroyed this beautiful, and still living conifer.

San Felipe de Neri Church

This is the huge, old Catholic church in Old Town Albuquerque. It is over 200 years old. I took this photo from across the street from the church, and you can see the steeple and gates leading to the area in front of the church. This church is still used and very popular for weddings and other celebrations. This church is known as the historic San Felipe de Neri Church.

*Alpine Mentors* and Steve House?

"Alpine Mentors promotes alpinism by encouraging, coaching and climbing with technically proficient young alpinists who aspire to climb the worldʼs greatest mountains in a lightweight, low-impact style."
http://www.alpinementors.org/
I think this is a GREAT idea!
But it aint a give away either.
This is one of the questions on the application.
"You are climbing the 1938 route on the north face of the Eiger. The first day you manage to get to Death bivouac, half way up the route. That night a storm comes in and you are pinned down for 3 days. You started with three days of food and fuel, but by being careful, you have saved a small amount of both. You have a partner of equal experience, 6 cams, 4 pitons, 6 nuts, 4 ice screws, and 2 60 meter ropes. You have no radio or cell phone and no chance for outside help. It is 10 degrees F and has snowed 12" in the past 24 hours. What is going through your mind and what would you do?"
Mt. Rainier, Furher Finger
The weather was great on day one and OK on summit day. The fresh snow from a few days earlier made the climb pretty tiring. We ended up using our snowshoes to keep from sinking into the mushy snow on the way down from high camp.
It was fun and challenging to climb a new route on Rainier.

The Florida Crowd Lands in Chesapeake

It is feeling like a little mini-reunion here to us.
Last year, we hardly saw any of our winter friends, even though we hoped to. This year we had low expectations in this area, so we've been thrilled beyond words to have Florida friends around since we left Florida. Granted, it will not stay that way, but we are loving it for now.
Jack and Diane and their family Jim and Marlene are still at the park. Tracy and Jim are still here too. They had landed here while we were still here last time, with Lee and Judy, but I didn't see them. It was great to see then again.

Going for a scooter ride in the mountains of Lesvos, Greece and a lunch stopover in Vafeios
When Dutchman and I are not doing this, this, this, this, this, and this(this one is unforgettable)during our holiday last summer in Lesvos, Greece, we were out and about exploring the island with our rental scooter.

One of the afternoons we took the scooter for a mountain ride nearby. We were not planning on driving far, we’re just going for a ride, enjoy the views and the fresh sea air and then have late lunch at a taverna in Vafeios that I read about—Taverna Vafios.
In Mithymna, they are offering donkey rides to Vafeios where participants rest for lunch at Taverna Vafios and back. Indeed, Dutchman and I saw the donkey tour group as we went up the mountain. The poor donkeys were so cute, I don’t think I could ever let one of these animals carry me.
On other matters, I have become an expert in taking pictures behind the Dutchman on a moving scooter.
More pictures below... actually, LOTS of pictures =)

A very typical afternoon scene in the mountain villages of Lesvos.

An interesting way of piling up tables and chairs. It almost looked like art installation.

Here were are at Taverna Vafios having a light lunch of Greek salad and yoghurt with honey and crushed walnuts.

I prefer Greek yoghurt with crushed walnuts than with whole walnuts.

It was late for lunch, we almost had the taverna to ourselves except for a table in the corner with English holidaymakers.

Stuffed zucchini flowers.

Stops to enjoy the views... that is Turkey from the distance.

I really, really, really miss summer now.
I think I need to get out of this country for a long weekend. But where? It is still cold everywhere....
